WHAT IS NEURODIVERSITY-AFFIRMING THERAPY?

Welcome to the neurodiversity-affirming page! If you've made it here - welcome. You're already on the right path to supporting your child in the best way possible.

Before we can get into what neurodiversity-affirming therapy is, we need to answer the question: What is neurodiversity? Neurodiversity means that there are variations in the human brain. These variations can include autism, ADHD, Alzheimers, dyslexia, and more! Two self-identifying terms are neurotypical (someone who does not identify as having a neurological difference) and neurodivergent (someone who does identify as having a neurological difference).

Given that information, we can then move on to discussing what neurodiversity-affirming therapy is!  Neurodiversity-affirming therapy is therapy that accepts, supports, and celebrates differences in neurotypes. This type of therapy doesn't expect to change the way a child thinks, doesn't use behavioral approaches, and doesn't highlight a person's weaknesses. Rachel Dorsey, The Autistic SLP, said it best by saying, "We treat difficulties that arise from being Autistic in this neurotypical society."

All Brains Speech Therapy is a practice that is proud to be neurodiversity affirming. Molly promises to continue listening to the Autistic population to learn and unlearn about how to best support her clients.
